The Corrosion Behavior of 309 stainless steel

The chemical composition of 309 duplex stainless steel is listed: 0.058 wt.% C, 1.78 wt.% Mn, 0.44 wt.% Si, 0.017 wt.% P , 0.011 wt.% S, 23.28 wt.% Cr, 13.14 wt.% Ni, 0.14 wt.% Mo, 0.9 wt.% Cu, balance wt.% Fe.

For high-temperature application, in chemical plants and for welding, 309 stainless steel is more widely used than 304 stainless steel because it has better mechanical properties and corrosion resistance due to its higher Cr (23.28 wt.%) and Ni (13.4 wt.%) contents. Nano-crystallized 309 stainless steel (309SS) coating has been fabricated on glass substrate by DC magnetron sputtering.
